While we've outlined why the iPad is a superior device, that's a lot of cash to fork over for most people who just want a tablet to play games on, surf the interwebs, look at Facebook, or watch Netflix. Plus, it's also almost $200 more than the Fire HD 10. Not great, especially for a premium product (heck, even Macs have had feature this forever). For one, it doesn't really support multiple users (unless you're a school), so if you want to lend the device to a friend or family member, they're going to have access to ALL OF YOUR STUFF. There are some areas where the iPad loses points, however. If you prefer first-party accessories, this iPad now supports Apple's Smart Keyboard as well as the Apple Pencil (1st Gen). Not only does it have a massive advantage in the number, kind, and quality of available apps, but there are way more vendors that produce accessories like cases, keyboards, and other accoutrements. Apple typically maintains software support for anywhere from 4-6 years for its devices, and all of this is powered by Apple's custom A10 Fusion chip for really smooth performance.Īnother advantage for the iPad 10.2 over the Fire HD 10 is Apple's extensive ecosystem. You also get Apple's new iPadOS which allows for homescreen widgets and multi-window productivity (up to four windows if you count slide-over and picture-in-picture windows). The iPad 10.2 has some really impressive specs for an entry-level device, including an 8 MP camera capable of filming in 1080p, a biometric fingerprint reader for secure logins and purchases, two really good speakers, and the option to have a cellular data plan. At $329, this iPad is already in the "affordable" gadget range, and many vendors discount it even further. Sitting toward the bottom end of that spectrum is the iPad 10.2, otherwise known as the best deal in tech today. Whether you're trying to load a Prime Original or look for cookie recipes to start baking, Show Mode gives you everything you need to use your Fire Tablet hands-free.Apple's tablet lineup is more diverse and complete than ever, from the newly-updated iPad Mini to the super-premium iPads Pro. A swipe to the right opens a control panel with quick commands while your homescreen rotates between the clock, weather, news, and more. If you have an Echo Show in your house, you'll feel at home with this UI. You can access Show-specific settings by tapping the gear icon in the notification panel while this mode is enabled. Otherwise, issuing voice commands is harder. It works best when Hands-Free Mode is also turned on. To use Show Mode, you must enable Alexa on your device. Toggle on Show Mode, and right before your eyes, your Fire Tablet transforms into an Echo Show, complete with a large-screen UI. Just grab your tablet stand, prop it up on a flat surface, then swipe down from the top of the device to open the Quick Settings menu. It's the perfect option if you've got a road trip coming up.ĭid you know Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 devices can double as makeshift Echo Show alternatives? It transforms your tablet into the perfect gadget for the kitchen counter, the coffee table in the living room, or anywhere else around your house. There's also a filter to display downloaded content only, in case you're offline for an extended period of time. This includes synced Kindle purchases, apps and games from the Appstore, Prime Video content, and Audible selections, and you can customize it using the button at the bottom of this page. The Library tab is where you'll spot all of your digital content. It might not be immediately apparent, but you can easily create folders by dragging apps on top of each other or uninstall (most) unwanted software by pressing and holding an icon. You can get rid of advertisements or suggested content on the top of the Home tab by tapping, holding, and selecting Not Interested, leaving only your list of installed apps. With three tabs (For You, Home, and Library), Amazon's setup is simplified for a big-screen experience. Amazon's homescreen experience may not feel like classic Android, but with a little customization, it's usable, especially if you're a Prime subscriber. It's a difficult process that's easily broken through system updates and reboots. Although setting a third-party launch on Fire OS is possible, we don't recommend it.
